I recently spoke at two conferences — a learning and development Leadership Summit in Auckland, and the HR Summit in Melbourne. Both talks were about the same topic – LITFOW. Learning in the Flow of Work.

LITFOW can bring immense benefits to any organisation and its employees. It can really change the way we nurture talent and drive performance.

What is Learning in the Flow of Work?

Addressing Real-Time Needs

LITFOW ensures that learning is accessible when employees need it the most, directly within their workflow. Imagine empowering our teams with on-demand, bite-sized learning opportunities and resources, available at their fingertips. Instead of separate training sessions, employees will receive relevant information exactly when they face challenges or seek improvement, leading to immediate application and skill enhancement.

Another term that is used is J3. J3 means that learning is ‘Just enough, Just in Time and Just for me’.

Maximising Employee Productivity

By embedding learning opportunities into the flow of work, the time and effort employees spend on training programs is reduced. With microlearning, employees can quickly access knowledge and overcome obstacles without disrupting the work they are doing. This can boost productivity and minimise time away from core responsibilities.

Enhancing Knowledge Retention

Studies have shown that learners retain information better when it’s applied in real-world situations. LITFOW’s contextual learning environment allows employees to immediately practice new skills or knowledge, reinforcing their understanding and creating more meaningful learning opportunities. This, in turn, leads to greater proficiency and confidence in their roles.

Customised Learning Opportunities

LITFOW can deliver personalised learning experiences to employees. Again, the J3 concept of, ‘Just enough, Just in Time and Just for me’, means providing tailored content that addresses specific needs. This targeted approach ensures that each team member receives the right knowledge at the right time.

Embracing Technology for Agile Learning

LITFOW is about integrating the learning into the tools and software employees use daily. This enables continuous learning opportunities on the job. The seamless access to resources and support fosters a learning culture.

Empowering Social Learning and Collaboration

LITFOW encourages social learning and collaboration among employees. This not only strengthens the bond among employees but also fosters a sense of community and mutual support within an organisation.

In summary, I believe that LITFOW, or Learning in the flow of work, can significantly enhance learning and development initiatives and contribute to a more skilled, motivated, and high-performing workforce.

Taking a Whole Brain® Approach

The Whole Brain® Model is designed to help people learn to think better. Training that takes a Whole Brain® approach focuses on showing people how to use their whole brain – not just the parts with which they feel most comfortable.

The Whole Brain® Thinking model is divided into four separate quadrants, namely:
